SHS earns win, third place in season’s last game

CASPER — The Lady Broncs earned a win on their last game of the 2013-2014 season Saturday, taking third place in the 4A state tournament in Casper.

Sheridan High School defeated the Gillette Lady Camels 70-62.

In the first quarter, the Lady Broncs were the first to put points on the board and they held the lead throughout most of the matchup.

Before the game, coach Jessica Pickett could be heard telling her team that “relentless defense” was going to be their key to victory.

A back and forth first quarter meant the teams ended that period of play tied at 16, but the Lady Broncs pulled ahead to a 35-26 lead heading into the halftime break.

By the end of the third quarter, the Lady Broncs were up 55-45, but Gillette narrowed that gap in the fourth quarter.

With just under five minutes of play to go, the Lady Camels trailed by just five points. Gillette kept battling, sinking shots and with just under two minutes to go the team from Campbell County needed just one point to tie the game.

But fouls and made Lady Bronc shots made from the charity stripe meant the end to Gillette’s hopes for victory.

Robbi Ryan lead the Lady Broncs with 19 points for the game. She also pulled down seven boards. Teammate Jennae Fieldgrove was close behind with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Dylan Wright earned a double-double, putting up 11 and pulling down 13. Alison Geary added 11 points to the team total and grabbed six rebounds.

Overall, SHS shot 39 percent from field goal range and 42.9 percent from behind the arc. The also shot an impressive 75 percent from the charity stripe.

The Lady Broncs earned 15 turnover points and 13 second-chance points. They also had 20 turnovers and 11 steals on Saturday.

Gillette had 19 turnovers and 10 steals.

The Lady Broncs finished their season 23-4.

The Lady Broncs will lose four seniors to graduation this year — Maddy McClure, Molly Ligocki, Geary and Stephanie Schaffer. But, they’ll keep contributers Ryan, Taylor Townsend and Emily Julian.
