CASPER — Despite battling back to tie the game with about 30 seconds left to go, the Lady Broncs didn’t have enough to pull out the win Friday night in their 4A semi-final game, loosing 46-43 against Natrona. Sheridan High School will now face the loser of the Cheyenne East vs. Campbell County game in the third-place matchup today at 10:30 a.m.
Natrona dominated the Lady Broncs in the first quarter, jumping out to a 13-0 lead. SHS got a lot of looks at the basket early on, but couldn’t get any to fall. The team’s first points came from Jennae Fieldgrove with just under six minutes left in the second quarter. But, the Lady Broncs picked up the pace quickly after they found the net for the first time in the game. They went on a run and closed the gap to just three points, heading into the halftime break down 16-19.
Quick hands and tough defense helped the Lady Broncs force turnovers throughout the game, but Natrona maintained their lead the entire matchup. The Lady Broncs continued to tighten the gap in the third and fourth quarters.
With less than a minute left to play, Alison Geary tied the game to give the Lady Broncs a chance. But, Dylan Wright fouled, sending Natrona’s hottest shot of the night to the charity stripe.
Gabby Johnson — who lead Natrona with 16 points — sunk both baskets, putting Natrona up 45-43 with just under five seconds to go. The Lady Broncs had one more opportunity to sink a shot, but on the inbound play, Natrona made a steal and got fouled, earning one more basket to seal their win.
SHS senior Robbi Ryan lead the Lady Broncs in scoring, putting up 18 and pulling down four rebounds. Megan Myers added six points to the team total and Maddy McClure put up five.
Other scorers included Dylan Wright, Taylor Townsend, Emily Julian, Fieldgrove, Molly Ligocki and Geary.
The Lady Broncs’s field goal percentage on the night was 29.1 percent and 33.3 percent from 3-point range. They had 10 turnovers compared to Natrona’s 17 and got four second-chance points compared to Natrona’s 12.
