Lady Broncs head to semi-finals

SHERIDAN — The Lady Broncs basketball team started the state tournament off by holding the lead against the Riverton Wolverines, winning 51-38 Thursday morning. The Lady Broncs will move on to the semifinal game, Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Natrona.
With just under two minutes to go in the first quarter, Kaycen Townsend went to the line to shoot two free throws, sinking both. Coming into this weekend, Townsend was a 59 percent free throw shooter, averaging about 1.5 points per game, but she beat her average points with both free throws giving the Broncs a 19-8 lead.
In the first quarter, eight Lady Bronc players scored with Robbi Ryan putting up seven points. At the end of the first quarter the Lady Broncs lead the Wolverines 20-9.
Molly Ligocki fired a 3-pointer and drained it in the second half, pushing the Lady Broncs ahead 27-12. The Lady Broncs held off the Wolverines and headed into the halftime break up 31-18.
The SHS defense only allowed Riverton to have three scorers in the first half. The Lady Broncs went 11 for 24 from the field, two for seven from beyond the arc, seven for 10 from the charity stripe and pulled down 10 rebounds.
At the end of third quarter the Lady Broncs held the lead 41-27, making it a lower scoring quarter.
“We were a little slow in the third quarter,” SHS coach Jessica Pickett said. “We had great team effort to keep the lead.”
With 13 seconds left the Lady Broncs had a 13-point lead at 51-38.
Sheridan’s defense held Riverton to only four scorers and forced 16 turnovers.
In the end, Lady Bronc Robbi Ryan led her team with 20 points, eight rebound, three assists and two steals. McClure added eight points and Ligocki contributed seven.
As a team, the Lady Broncs shot 39 percent from the field and 16 of 25 from the line. They had 14 turnovers, 13 personal fouls and a total of 36 rebounds. Out of those rebounds 21 were defensive boards.
“It was a great game,” Pickett said. “Robbi Ryan and Maddi McClure had a huge offensive game. Dylan Wright and Alison Geary had big rebounds.”
