SHERIDAN — The 2014 Wyoming State Indoor Track Championships were held this weekend in Gillette.
The girls team finished in a tie for seventh place with Kelly Walsh, each team scoring 33 points. First place went to Gillette with 149.5 points. Fifteen of 22 teams scored points with Star Valley scoring the lowest above zero score of 2.
The boys team finished in a tie with Cheyenne Central for sixth place, each scoring 32. Natrona won the boys meet with 131 points. Sixteen of 22 teams walked away with points with Big Piney scoring the lowest above zero score of 2.
Sheridan High School boys and girls track athletes competed with several notable placements and achievements throughout the meet.
Taylor Ballek was named an All-State athlete for her second-place performance in the pole vault competition, flying 10 feet high.
Aaron Campbell was also named an All-State athlete after taking home a second-place finish in the boys high jump, reaching heights of 6 feet, 2 inches.
The girls in the 4X200 meter relay took home the only first-place finish for either SHS team. LeAnna Mitchell, Gabby Edeen, Ashley Fox and Mariah Grant finished a close race with a time of 1:50.48. Second-place Laramie was fractions of a second behind them with 1:50.79 and just ahead of third place Gillette with 1:50.84.
The ladies in the 4X400 meter relay broke the school record for that event after shaving off 14 seconds from their prior best time of the season.
“They just did a phenomenal job,” head coach Art Baures said. “They came into the race with a fast time already, ran without one of the fastest relayers due to an injury, and improved by 14 seconds. That is almost impossible.”
Fox, Edeen, Peyton Bomas and Gracie Edeen finished in 4:16.71.
Several relay runners had fast-paced individual finishes as well. Bomas finished strong in the 55-meter hurdles. After placing seventh in the preliminaries, she ran her way to a sixth-place finish in the finals with a time of 9.47. Fox also took eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:03.09.
Additional top finishes came from Shayla Christensen who threw 38 feet, 1 inch in the girls shot put for a fourth-place finish. Crystal Richards jumped 16 feet, 1 inch in the girls long jump for a sixth-place finish and Grant was right behind her in long jump taking seventh with a distance of 15 feet, 10.25 inches.
The 4X800 meter relay team of Cassandra Robinson, Xiomara Robinson, Katie Rotellini and Marissa Hegy finished eighth with their time of 10:45.42.
On the boys side of the meet, Matt Scarlett took fifth in both the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run with times of 2:00.7 and 4:26.77 respectively.
After coming in fifth in the preliminary round of the 55-meter hurdles, Seth Kovar finished the finals in third place with a time of 8.19. Tyler Julian took seventh in the same event with a time of 8.52.
The boys high jump had two high ranking Broncs, previously noted second place Campbell and fourth place finishing teammate Cameron Craft who jumped just 2 inches less than Campbell for a 6 foot finish.
Two relay teams finished in the top 10. Boys 4X800 meter relay team Taylor Bruso, Kyle Jerney, Rion Szatkowski and Scarlett took seventh with a time of 8:41.78. The 4X200 meter relay runners Kovar, Brian Kjerstad, Chris Munson and Miciah Huff took eighth with their 1:40.34 finish.
“We were really excited on Saturday,” Baures said. “We had a lot of kids pull through and score points, we had season best performances which is what you always hope for at a state meet and it was a nice end cap to a great season.”
