SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School Track team celebrated record breaking performances at the state championship meet in Gillette Thursday. The girls’ 4X200 relay team took first and broke their own school record for the third time this year, while another female runner broke a school record set in 2005.
The relay team comprised of LeAnna Mitchell, Gabby Edeen, Ashley Fox and Mariah Grant ran the 4X200 race in 1:50.48.
“The neatest thing is to have those girls win a state championship in that relay and that certifies them as all-state athletes,” Coach Art Bauers said, indicating before this year, the school record was set in 2011.
The girls broke the record the first time at a meet earlier in the season, and two more times since then.
“They run it faster each time,” Bauers said.
Junior Ashley Fox also broke an SHS record dating back to 2005 for the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.09. The finish put her in 8th place for Thursday’s event.
Matt Scarlett had a noticeable 6th place finish in the boys 1600 meter run with a time of 4:26.77.
Crystal Richards also took 6th place in the long jump with a distance of 16-feet, 1-inch.
Mariah Grant was behind Richards, in 7th place, with a jump of 15-feet, 10 inches.
Bauers was excited about day one at the state meet.
“It’s nice when we have relay teams placing and scoring points. It’s important for us from the team aspect because the kids work together to do it,” he said.
“From here, we’re going to do what we can and see if we can move up through the team standings.”
Bauers indicated the SHS boys hurdlers and all four girl shot putters made it into tomorrow’s finals, which will boost their team score. In addition, both the boys and girls 4X800 relay teams placed in the top eight.
“We expect to score points with those finalists,” Bauers said. “That will be a nice part of tomorrow’s meet.”
