SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College Generals beat Northwest College in the second round of the Region IX tournament last night, advancing to the final four.
The Generals never gave up the lead in a close round-two tournament game. Heading into the half, SC was up by seven and they expanded that lead throughout the second half creating a 14-point spread.
Northwest started to chip away at the lead and with only two minutes left of play the Generals lead was cut to just three points. To finish the game strong, Jamir Andrews put up a 3-pointer and the Generals won 82-75.
Tate Hilgenkamp, starting guard for the Generals, fell ill the night before the game and it was doubtful he would be able to play, but he rebounded just in time.
“A lot of guys stepped up to this win,” head coach Steve Smiley said. “Tate pulled together and made some huge plays for us.”
Top scorers for the game were Fredéric Duré with 15 points and Jeff Amazan with 14. Kaileb Rodriguez hit a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Iakeem Alston scored 11 and Abednego Lufile put up 10.
Tonight the Generals face the host team of the tournament, No.-6 nationally-ranked Northeastern Community College of Colorado, on their home court.
Smiley says the key to winning tonight will be overcoming the atmosphere of the game.
“They have a phenomenal crowd,” he said. “First we need to overcome that, then secondly we need to rebound and block well.”
For the first time in several years, the final four consists of the top four seeded teams as they all advanced in the tournament last night. No. 9-ranked Gillette faces No. 15-ranked North Platte at 6 p.m. before the Generals jump off at 8 p.m.
“Whoever wins this Region IX tourney will have earned it,” Smiley said. “All have 27 or more wins this year and we are one of only two regions in the nation with four teams in the top 30 in final poll and all four are still alive.”
The games will again be broadcast live at www.scgenerals.com.
Lady Generals end
season in second round
SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College women’s basketball team finished their season in the second round of the Region IX tournament Monday night.
The Lady Generals lost to Western Wyoming, 64-59.
“It was a good game,” coach Frank McCarthy said. “Our girls battled right ‘til the end against the host team.”
Sierra Toms led Sheridan College with 13 points, while Madison Forney was just behind her with 12 points.
Morgan Wille, Katie Kuhn and Josie Three Irons also contributed, putting up nine points apiece. Tiana Hanson also contributed seven points.
The Lady Generals went into the half down by three, 26-29, and fought through the second half to tie the game with three minutes left. But, McCarthy said, the Mustangs were able to jump ahead to take the win.
“Just thinking on the whole season, I’m really proud of the things we’ve done,” McCarthy said.
He added that the team is young and had some growing pains — losing five games by three points or less. The Lady Generals finished the season with a 19-12 overall record.
Having a young team, though, means a core group will return to the court for Sheridan College next year.
“These two games we played down here were our best games of the year,” McCarthy said. “Our future looks bright.”
