SHERIDAN — Gillette has earned bragging rights as one of the best wrestling programs in the state over the last decade, winning the last 11 4A state championships. But Thursday night, the Sheridan Bronc grapplers earned their own right to walk with a swagger, defeating the Camels at their house, 37-28.
“You can chalk up the win to some unlikely heroes,” coach Tyson Shatto said.
He added that the dual came down to the very last match.
Wins were earned by Timmy Cowan (170), Cody Delk (182), Dane Chambers (285), Braxton Cooper (106), Kyle Burton (113), Hayden Hastings (126), Wyatt Avery (138) and Tyler Mauck (160).
“If Tyler had gotten pinned, Gillette would’ve won by one point,” Shatto said. “But he won the match outright. It capped off a great night.”
Shatto added that while the team still has some work to do, he thinks that will help the team continue their momentum going into the regional tournament next weekend. The tourney will be held in Sheridan Friday and Saturday.
“We’re so proud of the kids who set goals all year long to beat this Gillette team,” Shatto said, adding that having the team’s hard work pay off is a testament to their dedication and that of the school, parents and coaches.
