SHS Ron Thon results: Broncs leap to runner-up finish

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Bronc wrestlers capped an impressive weekend at the Ron Thon Memorial Tournament Saturday, beating out Gillette for a second place team finish behind three individual champions.

Last year’s Sheridan Ron Thon result, a 17th-place finish behind only one champion, paled in comparison to this year’s improvement at the tournament known as “The Best of the Best.”

On Saturday in Riverton, Braxton Cooper (106), Hayden Hastings (126), and Cody Delk (182) won their respective weight classes as the Broncs made up enough points to pass Gillette after sitting in third Friday.
Kyle Burton (113) was third, and Tory Music (220) took fifth. Dane Chambers (285) was sixth.

The Broncs were second with 153.5 points behind Powell’s 203 and ahead of Gillette’s 146.

Cooper, a junior, defeated Star Valley’s Jake Thompson 5-4 in the 106-pound final, continuing his breakout season, going 5-0 on the weekend.

He pinned his semifinal challenger, Noah Wozney of Powell, winning a 10-5 decision in the quarters after a technical fall and a pin to start the tourney Friday.

For Hastings at 126, a semifinal forfeit by East’s Issac Garcia granted him his title shot, where the Bronc pinned Powell sophomore Nich Urbach. Urbach has more than 40 wins this season.

It was Delk’s second-straight “Best of the Best” title as the two-time All-American rolled through the 182-pound bracket after winning last year at 220 pounds.

He pinned his first two opponents before taking a 6-1 match over Carson Mock of Gillette in the semis. Delk beat Newcastle standout Merritt Crabtree in a 7-5 final.

In the 220-pound semis, Sheridan junior Tory Music fell to Dubois’ Sterling Baker, 5-2, dropping to the fifth/sixth-place match where he defeated Worland’s Casey Hernandez, 5-2, for fifth place.

Chambers battled back Saturday, winning two in wrestlebacks before suffering two-straight overtime defeats to finish sixth. Also an SHS senior, Chambers fell to Cheyenne East’s Brett Schaeffer 7-5 in the over time period.

At 113 pounds, Bronc junior Kyle Burton dropped major decision in the semifinals, but came back strong, winning consecutive major decisions of his own over Nigel Lopez of Cheyenne Central then Brodie Douglass of Lyman for third.

Leading up to the Broncs final regular season dual in Gillette this week, the Ron Thon success is a monumental benchmark for Sheridan under second-year head coach Tyson Shatto and his staff.

Gillette has won the last 11 4A state championships, and the two teams are unbeaten 4A East duals entering Thursday’s showdown.

The Broncs are scheduled to dual the Camels at 7 p.m.

They will return home Feb. 21-22 to host the 4A East Regional Tournament.
