SHERIDAN — This year’s Sheridan College Hall of Fame class features two of the best basketball players ever to play at the Dome and a three-sport athlete.
Donta Richardson, JoAnn Doyle LaFountain and Vanessa Skurok Buyok will be inducted during halftime of the Generals game against Dawson Community College on Saturday at the Bruce Hoffman Golden Dome.
“We’re really thrilled to be inducting the three individuals selected for the 2014 class,” men’s basketball coach and Athletic Director Steve Smiley said. “Donta, JoAnn, and Vanessa all had tremendous careers while part of the Generals family, and helped to set the standard of success that our programs still enjoy to this day.”
Saturday’s game is set to tipoff at 7:30 p.m., following the Lady Generals game at 5:30.
Donta Richardson (1999-2000, 2000-01)
During Richardson’s two-year career at Sheridan College, he averaged 22 ppg as a freshman then 27 as a sophomore, leading all of Region IX that year. He boasted nine games of more than 30 points, including games of 41 and 45. His 51-point effort against Cincinnati State was the result of a 14 out of 16 night from 3-point range.
An All-Region IX player both years, he was named first-team NJCAA All-American following his sophomore season. He received his associate degree from SC then moved on to the University of Wyoming where he continued his success on the court with the Cowboys.
As a junior, averaging 12 ppg, he was named third-team All-Mountain West and he helped the Cowboys advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He raised that to 18 ppg as a senior and earned a first-team All-Mountain West nod, leading the Cowboys to a quarterfinal NIT game. He played for eight years professionally in Europe, winning three titles as a six-time European All-Star. He played on the Detroit Pistons summer team in 2003 and completed his degree in social sciences from UW in 2013. Richardson in his first season as an assistant coach at St. Martin’s University in Washington.
JoAnn Doyle LaFountain (1999-2000, 2000-01)
A standout on the Lady Generals as a freshman, she was led the team in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. She was named both All-Conference and All-Region IX. As a sophomore she topped Region IX in rebounding with nine per contest, and was second in scoring at 19.4 ppg. She was third in free throw percentage (83 percent) and sixth in field goal percentage and was named the Wyoming Conference Player of the Year, and was NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American.
Vanessa Skurok Buyok (1975)
Buyok played volleyball, basketball and tennis during her time at Sheridan College. She was All-Conference and All-Region IX and was a Region IX tournament champion, competing in the NJCAA National Tournament in Midland, Texas. She was a member of 1975 basketball and volleyball teams and was the first Sheridan College volleyball player to be named to the Wyoming All-Conference and All-Region IX squads, and she was a member of the Lady Generals first North Sub-Region IX women’s basketball championship team.
