Sheridan teams beat Central; Gillette up next

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Lady Broncs started slow, but rolled to a 63-35 win over Cheyenne Central Saturday afternoon.
Starting 4-0 in conference play for the second-straight year, Sheridan will now prep for the first leg of the Gillette rivalry, coming up Friday at SHS.
The slow start, due perhaps to a physically trying Friday night game with No. 3 Cheyenne East that saw the Lady Broncs pull away late 59-47, resulted in a 12-12 tie after one quarter.
Finally putting together a run by way of some heavy full-court pressure, Sheridan would use 3s from Maddy McClure and Robbi Ryan on consecutive possessions late in the second quarter to take a 30-22 lead into the locker room.
Shots started falling for the Lady Broncs in the third as they held a 10-point lead. Ryan then deflated Central’s hopes with a spectacular play to close the quarter.
With the clock winding down, she stole an outlet pass and floated a shot from about five-feet behind the 3-point line in front of Sheridan’s bench and fans, waking up the smallish Saturday afternoon crowd as some shook their heads in amazement.
She finished with 20 points for the second-straight game, while McClure hit two 3s and finished with 10 points. Emily Julian scored eight, all in the second half, and Molly Ligocki hit two 3s, finishing with seven points.
Sheridan hosts Gillette at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at SHS, with the boys game to follow. Last year, teams split the rivalry home and away, with the Lady Broncs defeating the Lady Camels for the 4A East regional tournament title. The Lady Camels of course won the 2013 4A state title over Cheyenne East.

In Cheyenne, the No. 3 Sheridan Broncs got back on track with a 44-33 win over Cheyenne Central. Sheridan fell to No. 4 Cheyenne East Friday night. Sheridan fell behind 28-9 after one quarter and were put away by a late 3-pointer from East’s Quinton Pope, for a 64-62 final score. Reed Ritterbusch scored 17 points and Judson White had 19.
The Broncs will prepare for a meeting with No. 2 Gillette on Friday after going winless against the Camels a year ago. Gillette will likely gain a No. 1 ranking for the rivalry week after No. 1 Kelly Walsh fell to No. 5 Rock Springs on Thursday, and the Camels beat East today in Cheyenne, 62-57.
