SHERIDAN — In its most recent Parks and Recreation Master Plan, the city of Sheridan recommended developing larger, regional parks within the city rather than small, seldom used “pocket parks.” A recent donation of land on West Fifth Street will help fulfill that goal.
Sheridan Heights Ranch has donated 32 acres of land to the city of Sheridan for future use as a regional public park. The land includes a pond and will be accessed from Fifth Street west of the intersection with Mydland Road.
Plans are in place to connect the park to the city pathway system.
“We have for several years considered this area to be a natural place for a city park, and Cloud Peak Ranch subdivision was from the start designed with that in mind,” Sheridan Heights Ranch Manager Don Roberts said in a media release.
“The Park and Recreation study done by the city a few years ago also suggested a regional park in this location, and we are glad to be able to provide a suitable site,” he continued.
The park and surrounding land along Mydland Road between Fifth Street and Highland Park School will continue to be farmed until development begins. The area is part of the Cloud Peak Ranch annexation. It is intended to contain housing tucked between greens of the Hidden Bridge Golf Club.
At this point, there are no specific plans for development of the park, city Public Works Director Nic Bateson said. The city has been in negotiations with Roberts for a few years about the park, which will satisfy his requirements for open space in his proposed development for the area.
Bateson noted that the city will soon begin efforts to update its Parks and Recreation Master Plan. Opportunities and suggestions for the park land donated by Roberts will be part of public outreach and interviews with community stakeholders as the plan is updated.
“The consultants in the last study did an inventory of what we have and where we’re lacking,” Bateson said. “There will be a public outreach process to flesh out what opportunities we have for this new park.”
Bateson said there is no projected timeline on development of the park or the land surrounding it. Funding for development of the park has not yet been identified but will likely come from grants and optional one-cent funds for parks and pathways.
