DAYTON — Big Horn boys and girls basketball were at Tongue River for the first set of their annual conference rivalry matches on Friday night.
Not a seat was open in the gym, which featured its newest addition: an half-wall mural of an Eagle clutching a baby Ram in its talons.
The Tongue River Lady Eagles (9-2) proved the image accurate taking down the Lady Rams (5-7) with a final score of 51-36.
Eagles leading scorer Eryn Aksamit sunk 16 and brought down 10 rebounds.
Tara Stimpson claimed 12 rebounds and tied for second leading scorer with Kortni Sharp, each scoring nine points.
Hanneah Puckett, known to lead the way for the Lady Rams, often putting up double digits, finished the game with eight on the board.
“We got the Puckett girl in foul trouble,” Tongue River head coach Diane Moser said, “and that really worked to our advantage.”
With a score of 32-31 at the end of the third, the Lady Eagles pulled ahead in the fourth.
“I think going to press late bothered them a little bit,” Moser said. “It was a good team win with pretty balanced scoring but the seniors really stepped up tonight.”
In the boy’s game, the Rams (5-7) took down the Eagles (2-9) on their home court finishing the game, 58-46.
Colter Carzoli led the Rams, scoring 17 points, and Seth Kite held on to an impressive double-digit 11 rebounds.
Matt Yellowtail put 11 on the board for the Eagles and Jamie Dickerson held on to six rebounds, leading the team.
With Big Horn only up by three points at the end of the second, the final half of the game was key to their victory.
“In the second half our defense really solved some problems,” said Big Horn head coach Ryan Alley. “We kept them from scoring those three pointers and that was key.”
The boys and girls are back at their respective homes tomorrow. The Eagles face Riverside and the Rams will meet Kaycee with the girls kicking off the action at 2:30 p.m. in both gyms.
