The WYO Theater’s western movies series this Sunday will feature ‘Tom Horn.’
The film will be hosted by Jim Hamilton.
This was Steve McQueen’s second-to-last film, released about seven months before he died at 50 in 1980.
It’s the story of Horn, a controversial western character/scout/tracker, who was also known as a “range detective” which then carried the pejorative, “hired killer.”
Historians believe he was innocent of the murder of a Cheyenne teenager which caused his conviction and hanging, but guilty of other killings from which he got off. Twenty years ago, there was a ‘mock trial’ of Horn in Cheyenne and he was acquitted.
Wyoming’s manner of executions is in the news these days and it’s worth noting how Horn was executed by an automatic gallows, the Julian Gallows, invented by a local architect, James P. Julian in 1892. Using weights and water and having the condemned hang himself, the contraption apparently worked in Horn’s case Nov. 20, 1903 in Cheyenne.
The film starts at 3 p.m., is rated R, and co-stars the great Richard Farnsworth.

“An Ocean City police officer on routine patrol observed a man behind the wheel of his car, the engine running, the lights and radio on and the windows down. The officer had to use smelling salts to awaken him. He woke up and ordered a chicken taco from the officer, believing he was somewhere else.”
