Generals win easily; SC women escape, snapping Lady Trappers’ 10-game streak

SHERIDAN — The Lady Generals watched a 10-point lead evaporate in the final 33 seconds, but held on for a 73-71 victory over previously conference unbeaten Northwest College on Saturday.
A last-gasp effort from the Lady Trappers (13-6, 4-1) was foiled as their put-back attempt on the third of three free throws sailed wide as time expired.

Sheridan’s lead was 10 with 30 seconds remaining, but Northwest’s heavy full-court pressure got them back into it. The Lady Generals withstood the assault and snapped Northwest’s 10-game win streak.

Ultimately, it was a much-needed victory for Sheridan (12-7, 2-3) as they fight to stay in the Region IX title picture early in January.

“I thought it was the biggest win of the year for us,” head coach Frank McCarthy said. “We did make some mistakes at the end, but we will learn from them so they don’t happen again, and we still managed to win, which good teams do.”

He was pleased with the team’s improvement on the glass after allowing 24 offensive rebounds last Saturday in a win over Casper, giving up just nine offensive boards to Northwest. They held the Lady trappers to 36 percent shooting while hitting for 42 percent themselves.

Sierra Toms had a big night, scoring 26 points including five straight at the six-minute mark in the second half, which broke her team out of a nearly six-minute scoring drought that had shrunk Sheridan’s lead from double digits down to five points. Madison Forney added 20 points and 13 rebounds and Josie Three Irons had 18 points.

“We feel we really are playing well right now,” McCarthy added, “which is the time of year we need to be playing well.”

The Lady Generals host Little Big Horn College at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday before heading to Miles City Saturday.

For the Lady Trappers, Tongue River graduate Sarah Nielsen scored 11 points and had nine rebounds in her return to Sheridan County after winning a 2A state title last March with the Lady Eagles.

Generals 90, Northwest 85

SHERIDAN — The Generals (16-3, 4-1) kept pace with the top of the conference, staying hot with a 90-85 win Saturday night over Northwest (11-7, 1-4).

Sheridan led by 10 at the break. Fred Dure scored 23 points, Josh Adeyeye added 11 and nine rebounds, and Jeff Amazan had 13 and eight off the bench.

The Generals stayed near the top of Region IX, only behind Gillette (16-4, 5-0), who topped the Generals in December.

The two teams meet again Feb. 1 in Sheridan.

First, Sheridan hosts Little Big Horn College Tuesday with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. They’re at Miles City Saturday.
