Lady Rams bounce back from emotional loss, reach consolation final

CASPER — The Lady Rams have a new goal.

It’s similar to their first goal: make a run at the state tournament.

They took a step toward making that a reality Friday morning as they bounced back from a heartbreaking loss to Thermopolis with a 34-31 win over Sundance in the consolation bracket.

Lady-Rams-bounce-back“One of the life lessons that you learn from basketball is that you have those opportunities where you struggle and things don’t go your way, but you’ve still got to get back up the next day,” head coach Mike Daley said Friday morning after the win. “That’s pretty reflective of life, and I like those teaching lessons with basketball.

“That’s basically what we discussed afterwards, ‘it ain’t always fun but you still have to get back up the next day, and get back after it,’” he added.

Much like Thursday’s game in which the Lady Rams led by 10 points in the fourth quarter, their opponent would close in as time wound down.

But unlike Thursday when the Thermopolis Lady Bobcats stole a winner with 1.6 seconds left, the Lady Rams held on Friday.

“I though there were spots that we looked a little bit tired, “ Daley said, “but those are some battles you have in some big games when someone is making a run at you, you’ve got to fight, and I certainly felt like we did that.”

Hanneah Puckett scored 14 points to lead all scorers, hitting eight in the second half. Jadyn Mirich scored seven and Bailey Bard had six points and seven rebounds.

The Lady Rams led 16-6 at halftime, and Sundance didn’t enter double figures until three minutes had gone by in the second half.

Eventually, Kaycee O’Connor would come alive for the Lady Bulldogs, willing her team from elimination. She finished with 11 points, but the Lady Rams never allowed Sundance closer than three points, where the score would finish.

It was the third time this season the Lady Rams have beaten the Lady Bulldogs.

Big Horn will play Rocky Mountain at 9 a.m. today at Kelly Walsh High School in the 5th-6th place consolation championship game against Wind River. Rocky Mountain won a close game over Wind River Friday morning.

Daley said he challenged his team Thursday night, asking them how many 2A girls teams here at state leave winners.

“It’s three,” he told them. “You’ve got to find a new goal when you don’t reach the first goal at this tournament, you’ve got to find a second goal and a third goal. Our second goal was to go ahead and win this consolation championship. That’s what we’re going to try and get done.”
