Sheridan swimmers show well despite being 11 members down

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan boys swim team entered the pool with a skeleton team Friday at the High School Boys Gillette Relays. Only six out of 17 team members were able to participate in the meet due to a week of fighting the flu, head coach Brent Moore said.

However, the boys who did swim swam well, Moore said, especially since the meet was the first ever for several team members on a young team that has no seniors this year.

“This was about just getting some experience. Relay meets are always a good way to start. They all did really well,” Moore said.

While not all team members who missed the meet are currently sick, there were only nine practice days before the meet and swimmers had to have all nine practices under their belt in order to compete.

The best races for the team were the 400-yard freestyle relay, in which the team scored eighth place with a time of 4:03.09, and the 200-yard butterfly relay, which placed the team at sixth with a time of 1:57.41.

Members on the 200-yard butterfly include: freshman Trinton Myers, sophomore Jakob Eckard, sophomore Wayde Phelps and sophomore Presley Felker. The same team took eighth in the 400-yard freestyle.

Kelly Walsh High School out of Casper took first place at the meet with a score of 310. Sheridan was 11th with a score of 38. Moore said he looks forward to more meets and practices so the swimmers can get times and he can put together the best line ups.

“There’s lots of room for learning and gaining experience,” Moore said. “We need to get all of our team in the water together. That will help immensely.”
The boys are in Gillette again today for the Gillette Pentathlon. They’re in Cody and Riverton next weekend.
