TRE Construction to begin soon

RANCHESTER — Sheridan County School District 1 Business Manager Jeremy Smith reported to the SCSD Board of Trustees last night that either expansion or construction on a new Tongue River Elementary School will likely begin soon.
Smith said he recently met with representatives from the state School Facilities Department and learned that Tongue River Elementary is second on the state’s list of schools due for replacement.
“I am extremely happy to report we are on the list,” Smith said. “We’ll be looking at a new elementary very soon.”
Superintendent Marty Kobza said the building has been on the state’s list for replacement for several years and fluctuated up and down in terms of priority.
However, it is now in good position to move ahead for approval in coming months.
“There is only one school (in the state) ahead of Tongue River Elementary in terms of need for capacity,” Smith said.
Several years ago the school board purchased property adjacent to the Tongue River Middle School which will serve as the building location for a possible new school.
Kobza said the new school is needed to deal with current over capacity issues as well as expected future enrollment increases. Until the new school is built, the district will continue to deal with overcapacity issues through a variety of measures.
“We’ve made some modifications, but we are still way under the 16 to one ratio,” Kobza said about how the school is dealing with the current number of students. “We’ll continue to make it work.”
In other business, the board unanimously approved continuation of the alternative schedule, or four-day school week, for the district after a public hearing in which no public comments for or against the schedule were received.
The board also saw presentations from Family Career and Community Leaders of America students about the projects they are taking to national competition in Nashville in July. They also saw several living history presentations from Tongue River Middle School students who impersonated their favorite heroes.
