SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Lady Broncs never trailed, sharing the scorebook in a 66-43 season opening win Friday night over Green River.
New coach Jessica Pickett was pleased with her squad’s first game, particularly on offense.
“We’re pretty excited to get the season kicked off, I’m grateful that Green River braved the roads and came up so we could kick-start our season,” she said. “I’m really proud of the girls showing up and taking care of business tonight.”
Even though last year’s squad featured now-Wyoming Cowgirl Hailey Ligocki, they were known for their ability to spread the ball around. That didn’t change Friday night as Maddy McClure scored 14 points, Taylor Townsend scored 13 and Molly Ligocki added 12. Alison Geary scored eight.
“We were just talking about what a blessing it is to have so many different weapons on the same team, our depth is really going to come in handy for us,” she said.
Five players got in on the scoring in the first quarter to build a 13-3 lead, and the Lady Broncs were up 33-19 at halftime.
While early season jitters came in the form of some overly-aggressive defense and mounting fouls, Pickett took that as an acceptable first game problem.
“We’re having to adjust a little bit with being so aggressive,” Pickett said.
“That’s different for them, they like to go at it but I’m proud of them for adjusting and we have another shot at getting better tomorrow.”
Green River kept the margin around 20 points in the second half, hitting five 3s, but the Sheridan win was never in doubt.
The Lady Broncs likely have a stiffer test today at 1 p.m. when they take on Billings Skyview at SHS.
“We moved the games up so they could get here and get home safely,” Pickett said. “I’m not sure what to expect even though we saw them this summer, but we’re just looking forward to getting another game.”
Game time was moved up to 1 p.m. due to the inclement weather.
