“Did you cover your tomatoes?” one Press reader asked. “That was some frost we had, last night, wasn’t it?”
The Sheridan Press had its Christmas party Wednesday night at Warehouse 201. The food was terrific; the atmosphere both festive and intimate. Tip of the Hat! to John Harrison and his crew for a memorable night. Kudos!, too, to Phil Ashley, the Press’ marketing director, and Becky Martini, its office manager, for coordinating the evening together.
We ate, had a few awards, played bingo, listened to live music. Good stuff, this.
We honored two staff members with the Staff Member of the Year awards.
• Janea LaMeres is a member of our advertising sales team. And she’s been “crushing it.” Nothing happens until somebody sells something, so goes the old chestnut. Moreover, she manages our pre-print/insert business and we didn’t miss a single insertion date this year for a customer. Our big, Every-Home-Gets-One/Black Friday saturation Press newspaper last week had more than 20 inserts inside, along with several “wrappers” and special sections. These inserts alone are a year-long planning project, coordinating with national, regional and local advertisers. Janea is part of the Christmas Stroll committee, was part of the Press’ rodeo parade activities and played second base on the Press’ softball team. Why, she even wore a costume to our in-house Halloween party/luncheon.
• Chad Riegler manages our mailroom, a busy, deadline-centric place. He works with Janea in coordinating pre-print inserts while managing personnel, resources and works with our independent contractors who deliver the newspaper. He also coordinates insertion, bundling and other duties with our commercial printing customers. Chad participated in our in-house management program this year. He, too, was a key player in our special Black Friday edition’s success. Chad is active in the community, particularly with Easter Seals. This year, The Sheridan Press was named the “Business of the Year” in Sheridan by the local Easter Seals organization.
In a few minutes of remarks, I noted how we had “moved the cheese” in 2013 – three unique editions of Destination Sheridan magazine. That we started a signature event for Sheridan, the FAB Women’s Conference; that we published three enterprise journalism projects dealing with our local energy industry and its history. (It received a national journalism award from the Inland Press Association.) Also, sections on the Capital Facilities Tax renewal and a forthcoming special section on the Affordable Care Act. (Dec. 14). Too, we published special sections that recognized the opening of the cardiac care unit at Sheridan Memorial Hospital and last month, a special section celebrating the state football championship at Big Horn. We launched a newly designed website in April; and why yes, were voted the “most improved” softball team by the Sheridan Recreation District.
This extra effort — a fury of creativity, curiosity, and commitment — goes into publishing these projects. All the while, there are the daily routines and responsibilities of being the local newspaper, both in print, online and mobile.
It’s a terrific staff and for one night, we raised a glass to one another and shouted bingo!
