RANCHESTER — Ranchester Town Council passed on third and final reading Tuesday an ordinance regarding minors dining in bars.
The ordinance will require children under 18 to be accompanied by an adult 21 years of age or older when dining in restaurants that are located within bars. It also restricts anyone under the age of 18 from being in a bar area after 10 p.m.
“People had seen children in bars and brought it up to us, so we thought we better get an ordinance going,” Ranchester Mayor Allan Moore said.
Council members also passed on second reading an ordinance regarding fire pits within town limits.
Moore said some residents have dug holes in their back yard for use as a fire pit, which poses safety concerns.
With Ordinance #257, Ranchester will require fire pits to be above ground and covered with a grate or, if dug into the ground, to be surrounded by concrete and rocks and grated.
“It offers a little more protection than just a pit burning in the ground,” Moore said.
No objections have been made by residents to either ordinance regarding minors dining in bars or fire pits within town limits, Moore said.
The council was set to discuss an annexation of Spirit Ridge Lot 2, which is located across the road from Tongue River Middle School, but the issue had to be postponed, Moore said.
Planning Commission members were sick and unable to meet, which means they could not make a recommendation to Ranchester Town Council.
The annexation will include approximately 100 acres, 10 of which will be used as a site for a new elementary school, and the rest of which will be used for development around the school, Moore said.
Moore said he hopes the planning commission can meet soon so the council can discuss the annexation at its next meeting Dec. 17.
