SHERIDAN — A Sheridan native who is now a producer and disc jockey based out of Los Angeles is making a point to bring his work back home on a monthly basis. Shawn Day, 34, has started hosting a monthly residency at the Oasis Lounge, located within the Holiday Inn.
Day was born in Osaka, Japan, but shortly thereafter, his family moved to Sheridan, where he grew up and ultimately graduated from Sheridan High School in 1997.
Since then, Day’s music career has taken him all over the world, including four years living in London.
While Day considers his hiatus necessary for his personal growth, he said he’s looking to get back to his roots.
“Sheridan has always been home base for me,” he said. “I wanted to create a reality where I’m spending half of my time in Wyoming and half in LA with the eventual idea of being based at both locations.”
Day said he has recently converted his equipment into a minimized, travel-friendly setup to allow him to keep one foot in California and one foot in Wyoming.
“I had an experience in New York where I noticed all the musicians had only backpacks. No one was driving to a gig,” he explained. “I went back to LA and sold a lot of my equipment — guitars, amplifiers, anything over 60 pounds, and I converted to a ‘fly friendly’ setup.”
Day’s DJ equipment now entails only a few cables, a laptop and an iPad, among a few other accessories. He said he plans to incorporate his techno and house-inspired musical influences into a unique theme for each of his appearances at the Oasis. His next appearance, Saturday evening from 7 p.m. to midnight, is dedicated to tango.
“I want it to be a really nice late-night environment,” Day said. “I want to transform the Oasis bar into something like a martini bar — good people, good music and vibes. That’s what I really want to do.”
In addition to established monthly appearances at the Oasis Lounge, Day has booked the upstairs room at the Elks club for a New Year’s Eve party featuring live performances from his bands Gumby Brown and the Nifty Critters and Greenhorse.
