SC basketball sweeps Rocky

SHERIDAN — Sheridan College basketball teams continued their fast starts to the season Tuesday night at the Bruce Hoffman Golden Dome.

The Lady Generals used a 72-43 victory over Rocky Mountain College to play the whole bench, moving to 3-0 on the season. In the nightcap, the Generals pulled away in the second half behind a big night from freshman Jamir Andrews and his 26 points as they moved to 3-0 as well after a 86-51 win over Rocky.

The Lady Generals will play in Casper this weekend, meeting Gillette College Friday then Casper on Saturday. For the Generals, they head to Cheyenne for a tournament hosted by Laramie County Community College. SC plays EWC Friday then LCCC Saturday.

Madison Forney scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds while Josie Three Irons chipped in 11 points and seven boards as the Lady Generals cruised last night.

Tiana Hanson, a freshman from Shepherd, Mont., pulled down 14 rebounds and scored seven points off the bench.

“What we want to do with every team is we want to create those habits — always play hard, always get the ball to the help,” head coach Frank McCarthy said. “We have some strengths this year, getting the ball inside, but that can be hard because sometimes that perimeter shot is there.
“We’ve got some depth,” he said. “We’ve got four quality post players, and they do get tired some times so it’s good to be able to rest them a little bit.”
McCarthy hopes to use that depth to their advantage this year, whereas last season the Lady Generals relied on guard play and inside-out play of athletic forwards.
“They do get tired sometimes, they have to run the full length of the court, but I think that’s our strength this year.”
He added that the depth goes further than that.
“I think this is as deep as we’ve been,” he said. “That’s what we want to do is play more kids, because at the regional tournament if we get a bye we’ve got to play three straight if we don’t we’ve got to play four straight. It seems like, to win it, you have to have depth. And I think it just helps morale too.”
After two of their first three wins have come by double digits, the Lady Generals competition heats up this weekend.
“We want to play somebody that’s good so we’re thankful that Gillette and Casper did this,” he said. “Sometimes when you’re playing lesser opponents, you get kind of a swagger that’s not authentic. Now we’ve got a great test right off the bat.”

Jamir Andrews (Dublin, Calif.) hit five of eight from behind the arc, all in the second half, as the Generals pulled away from a pesky Rocky squad that remained within single digits at halftime.

Andrews finished with 26 points, Kyi Thomas chipped in 11 and Iakeem Alston had 10 points and four assists. Freshman Rudy Joly (Montreal, Canada) brought down 10 boards in just 10 minutes of court time.

The Generals out-shot and out-rebounded the Bears but turned the ball over 19 times, allowing Rocky breathing room in the first half. But the still-gelling squad showed a depth in scoring talent with Andrews off the bench.
