SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College basketball teams showed promise in holding onto narrow early-season wins Saturday.
After blowouts to start their season schedule Friday, playing in their annual Holiday Inn Tournament, both the men’s and women’s squad fought off Snow College out of Ephraim, Utah, Saturday night.
The Lady Generals used strong play from sophomore Madison Forney late in the second half to withstand a charge from Snow. Forney finished 18 points, Seirra Toms added 10 points and sophomore Josie Three Irons chipped in 10 points, seven assists and eight rebounds.
The Lady Generals led 25-13 at halftime, never surrendering the lead despite Snow finding themselves within one possession for most of the final five minutes. The Lady Generals held on for the 57-54 win.
Lady Generals head coach Frank McCarthy knew Snow was a good team; they showed athleticism and depth Saturday, and they play in a region with always-competitive Salt Lake, College of Southern Idaho and N. Idaho.
“It was a great test for us,” he said. “It was nice to come away with a win against good competition early in the season.”
Early in the year he said he’d like to see his team take care of the ball as turnovers in the second half allowed Snow to close the gap. Still, SC had 17 assists to Snow’s three, and shot 12-14 from the free throw line.
Due to the government shutdown, the Lady Generals annual trip this weekend to Air Force Prep was scrapped as the Prep squad were forced to cancel their season. Instead, SC will see familiar competition in Casper, Gillette and Otero in Casper.
“It’s a good thing,” McCarthy said. “It doesn’t count in the standings, but it will give us a good barometer.”
Generals 76, Snow 75
The Generals entered the weekend carrying a No. 21 national ranking, and held onto a 76-75 win Saturday night over the formidable Snow squad — a team that spent time in the national rankings last season.
Jeff Amazan led the way with 18 points for the Generals, Fred Dure had 13, and Preston Wells had 12. Iakeem Alston dished out a game-high eight assists.
The Generals travel to Cheyenne this weekend for the Laramie County Community College Tournament where they’ll play Eastern Wyoming College Friday and LCCC on Saturday.
Tuesday night, the Lady Generals and Generals play at home, hosting Rocky Mountain College at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. respectively.
