Sheridan hosts state cross country meet

SHERIDAN — Sheridan High School didn’t have an All-State runner this fall.
Junior Taylor Bruso was 15th and the top local finisher in a fast 4A boys race at Saturday’s Wyoming State Cross Country Meet at the VA Medical Center where the top three runners broke the course record.
Laramie’s Jonah Henry ran a 15.22, shattering former Bronc Dylan Morin’s 15:57 from 2010. The Laramie boys won the team title behind Henry and the fourth, fifth and seventh place runners. Sheridan was 10th.
Sheridan has one senior on the entire squad, Zoe Sherman, running six sophomores, five freshman and three juniors Saturday. Luckily for them, the next few years at their state meet should yield better results as the older team gets two more shots at a home state meet.
“I thought they learned a lot in that race, I think we had three kids who had run in a state race before out of 14 kids,” head coach Art Baures said. “It’s good for them to get into that atmosphere and that competition level, next year they’ll be a lot better prepared mentally.”
“It can be a little overwhelming; but they all ran faster, but the whole race went faster. I couldn’t believe the quality of the kids in the race. It turned into a real fast course on Saturday.”
Wyoming Indian won its seventh straight 3A boys team title, and Gillette repeated as 4A girls champions, winning their third in four years time. They had the top three individual placers. The Lady Broncs were 11th, led by Janika Sweeney, a sophomore. She ran 21:06.23 for 32nd place.
Pine Bluffs/Burns won their fourth-straight team title out of the 2A girls division.
In the 3A boys division, it was Star Valley’s race, as they upended two-time winners Jackson. The 3A girls race was won by Cody for the second time in three years.
As for the first year for SHS as host, things went smoothly.
“It was really well received; we had a lot of compliments that’s a tribute to Mr. (Don) Julian Mr (Pete) Hawkins and making it such a nicely run meet.
“The kids liked the course, and the weather was perfect. It seemed like it went real well.
“Our kids, I was glad they were at home, it was good for them to be able to warm up on their home course and run in front of their hometown,” he continued.
“Their character is outstanding, we have great students on the team. They have great ethics and they really do enjoy each other as teammates. Those are intangibles that could play in our favor if you’re willing to put in the work.”
