Press wins explanatory reporting award for energy project

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan Press staff was recently recognized by the Inland Press Association for their work on an in-depth reporting project about the energy industry.

The project, “The Big Bang — A boom and bust energy industry,” was published in a series in June and July, then republished as a special section July 20.

The project, completed primarily by former business and public safety reporter Paolo Cisneros, features reporter Christina Schmidt and photojournalist Justin Sheely, received a second-place award in the Inland Press Association’s 2013 Local News Writing Contest in the explanatory reporting category for newspapers with circulations less than 10,000.

“This award is really exciting for our staff,” managing editor Kristen Czaban said earlier this week. “It is the result of several months of work, a lot of research and a collaborative process we plan to continue to utilize for future projects at The Sheridan Press.

“This is an award to be especially proud of because we were competing against newspapers from across the country,” Czaban added.

The eight-page section covered a variety of issues surrounding one of the state’s most important industries with articles on topics including economic impacts of mining, energy policy, the history of Sheridan County’s coal mines and the logistics of working in a global market.

The award will be presented during a ceremony in Chicago next week.

The entire series of articles and an e-edition version of the project can be seen at thesheridanpress.com.
