SHERIDAN — The Wyoming State Cross Country Meet will be held Saturday in Sheridan, bringing droves of harriers to the VA Medical Center course.
The tree-laden course, described by SHS coach Art Baures as medium-fast, is unique in its appeal to spectators.
It’s winding path has countless spots for race-watchers to move between, providing the opportunity to see the same runner in different parts of the race.
Sheridan teams have worked through a season of rebuilding, the young squad finished fifth in both boys and girls races at conference last weekend.
The 2A boys field has been dominated by Wyoming Indian, who has won the last four state meets.
Pine Bluffs/Burns defends a three-year title run in the 2A girls race, while Star Valley was last year’s boys and girls 3A winner.
In 4A, Laramie took last year’s boys title, while Campbell County won on the girls side.
Sheridan runners — brother and sister Dana and Dylan Morin — hold the overall course records. Dana ran 18:38 in 2009 and Dylan ran 15:57 in 2010.
Race start times are as follows: 4A boys at 10:30 a.m.; 3A boys at 11 a.m.; 2A boys at 11:30 a.m.; 4A girls at noon; 3A girls at 12:40 p.m.; and 2A girls at 1:20 p.m.
An awards ceremony will follow the final race.
Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for students, and attendees are asked to follow directions of parking volunteers, contining straight ahead to the public parking area once they enter the VA grounds.
This is the first of three years for SHS as the state meet’s host school.
