Cross country teams 5th at conference

SHERIDAN — Sheridan High School boys and girls varsity cross country teams took fifth at the conference championship meet at Camplex Park in Gillette Friday. The boys and girls JV teams took fourth.

“The kids had good efforts, but we didn’t have the best racing tactics,” coach Art Baures said. “I think executing the race plan will certainly help us going into next week.”

Junior Taylor Bruso placed seventh in the 5K boys varsity run with a time of 17:12.78. First place was taken by Laramie High School with a time of 16:15.70.

“We had a really bright spot with Taylor Bruso who ended up seventh, so he’s an all-conference athlete, and that’s a really good finish for him,” Baures said. “He deserves it; he’s trained really hard. He leads our boys team.”

Freshman Janika Sweeney ran a time of 21:52.07 in the girls varsity 5K run. She placed 19th. Campbell County High School took the top spot with a time of 19:48.88.

In the junior varsity 5K runs, senior Collin Cundy came in with a time of 19:48.81, which put him in 16th place. Sophomore Mikaela Weeder ran a time of 24:26.86 for 12th place.

“Some of our younger kids had good races, too, so now we just have to get them all on the same page, and we should be fine,” Baures said.

Baures said the conference meet was a good experience for the young SHS team with its stiff competition.

“Gillette with their girls are just very good, and the boys Laramie team is just one of the best I’ve seen in a long, long time. You have some other good teams behind them, you know, so it’s a tough conference,” Baures said. “Our kids are young, and they learned about what it can be like at a tough conference. And they still ran hard, you know. Their efforts were good.”

Baures said he’d like to see the team finish in the top half at state.

“How close we can get to that goal, we’ll find out. But we’d love to finish in the top half. That’s sort of a realistic, lofty goal for us,” Baures said.

Sheridan will host the state cross country meet Oct. 26 at the VA Medical Center course.
