SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College Lady Generals narrowly missed their first win of the season Saturday.
A 2-1 overtime defeat at the hands of Trinidad State was disappointing, but a vast improvement against a team that beat SC 7-0 in September. Lea Hickman scored her second goal of the season, tying things 1-1 in the 80th minute.
“We felt like we had the momentum, going into OT ready to take it on, but in the second period there was a breakdown at the back that cost us the game,” head coach Stefan Skillman said. “It was a much better result than the last time we played these guys.”
The Lady Generals gave up 33 shots on goal in that Septbember loss, but this time trailed the shot count just 15-6, earning three corners to the Lady Trojans seven.
“Overall the weekend was a really good showing for us,” he said. “It was a fun weekend because we were very competitive with both teams. We enjoyed playing, afterwards we kind of took the perspective that we raised the bar. These girls can take the life lesson that even though the results aren’t there, we still worked hard to improve, stayed united and played hard for each other.”
He said Baylee Baker played well at defender, and Destanee Cook did a good job up front, her play with Stephany Sessions creating Hickman’s chance on goal.
The team fell 1-0 to Otero Junior College Friday afternoon. Jacey Repsis had a good game at keeper, Lynette Nygard, and Celena Kelly had good games as well, Skillman said, against a team that defeated SC 3-0 in their first meeting.
The Lady Generals play LCCC Friday and Western Wyoming Saturday, and Skillman hoped that their improvement continues in order to finish the season with their first Region IX win.
