SC falls 3-2 to Northwest College

SHERIDAN — Sheridan was unable to finish a late comeback attempt in a 3-2 loss to Northwest College Wednesday.

Hunter Reece got the Generals on the board when he curved a corner kick into the net, untouched, early in the second half and cut the Trappers lead to 2-1. Northwest got goals from Matt Lowndes and Gage Woodard, let loose inside the Generals 18-yard box after SC started slow.

“I thought we got off to a really slow start, didn’t really show the energy or the effort that we needed and against a team that plays with a lot of physicality like that, you’ve got to jump out right away, and two goals early definitely hurt us,” head coach Austin Albers said.

“I was really proud of the way our guys battled back and took their opportunities, but just that lack of mental maturity down the stretch with the late goal, giving up that quick one.”

A few minutes after Reece’s goal, midfielder Aaron Gann (Cheyenne) found space on the right side and beat the keeper to draw even at 2-2.

But, the Generals hopes were quickly dashed as Will Moats fired a howitzer over Generals keeper Ian Feather from outside the right corner of the box, keeping the shot high and just under the post, sealing the 3-2 win.

The Generals generated plenty of late corners and set pieces — Reece forced an acrobatic save on one free kick late in the game — but were unable to climb back.

Albers said he’d like to see better execution from his team on set pieces, and hoped that they avoid letdowns after scoring goals, as they did Wednesday on the final strike.

Sheridan plays Otero Friday and Trinidad State Saturday.
