SHS cross country Billings results

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School cross country teams finished in the middle of the pack at a large meet Saturday in Billings.

Head coach Art Baures was again pleased with his young team’s continued growth, with the boys team finishing seventh, led by Taylor Bruso, and the girls ninth behind Janika Sweeney.

“The Billings Invite proved to be a very good meet for our team in the respect that it was a great day on a flat and fast course,” Baures said. “Many good teams were in attendance and the Sheridan athletes competed very well. The effort shown by the athletes was indicative of their potential right now.”

Baures said the boys varsity performance should give them a confidence boost going forward, as besides Bruso’s good showing, he was pleased with the boys as a team this week.

“They reduced their packing space for runners 1-5 from 2:11 in Loveland a week ago to 1:27 in Billings,” he said. “That shows we are getting much better as a team and pushing limits that will help us toward the end of the season.”

For the girls, there was improvement as well, Baures said. He was pleased as the girls are starting to compete at a level reflective of their training and practice times.

“Experience is so valuable for these young girls and their confidence is coming along at the right time.  We can improve a great amount in the last part of the season if we work together and I think that team concept is starting to take shape.”

The boys junior varsity ran well again, improving with assertiveness in races, he added. JT Vreiswyk nearly won the race in the later stages, leading a team that enjoys getting up to the front of races all season, Baures explained. Emma Whiteman had a very good time and place, Baures praised the girls junior varsity squad.

“She is getting some valuable experience that will help the varsity team in the last few weeks remaining in the season,” he said. “She is one of many girls that are young and talented. We will be excited to see how far they can progress for the rest of the season.”

Varsity squads take the week off as they train for conference and state meets. The JV squads compete at Buffalo High School Thursday.
