Volleyball: SHS falls to Gillette; Border Wars on for Saturday

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School volleyball team’s struggles continued in a straight sets loss to Gillette Thursday night.

As they prepare to host the Wyoming-Montana Border Wars Saturday, the Lady Broncs hoped to use a good result against their rival to spark what’s been a tough season entering the month of October.
In the end, the team experienced its second conference loss to the Lady Camels this year (25-18, 25-15, 25-20).

“Overall, I felt the girls played together as a team,” head coach Wendi Ruby said. “I saw them be happy for one another, work together, and make great hustle plays. This is something we’ve really been stressing and talking about so I was proud to see them exhibit it.”

“I think the girls are starting to believe they have potential and can compete with the good teams,” she continued. “Once they really start to believe I know the wins will come. I am excited to see the team continue to grow and the girls work hard for what they want.”

As a team the Lady Broncs had eight aces and 22 digs.

Gillette pulled away early in the first two sets, but the Lady Broncs battled throughout the third and final set. In the third, after both teams contested an official’s decision on a tipped ball awarded as a point to Gillette, momentum swung to the visiting squad when the call was upheld and Sheridan trailed 10-8. The Lady Broncs fought back and forth until Gillette pulled away after an 18-18 tie.
Athletics director Don Julian said Friday that the Border Wars are still on schedule for Saturday, despite the inclement weather.

The Lady Broncs (1-5 4A East, 7-15 overall) will host tournament beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday. Sheridan is scheduled to play Bozeman, Mont., and three Billings high schools. Natrona, Gillette and Kelly Walsh are also scheduled to compete.
