Friday’s SC soccer home openers to honor program contributor Maier

SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College soccer teams begin home competition this weekend, and Friday’s openers will be held in honor of program contributor Steve Maier.

The college announced today in a press release that Dr. Maier will be recognized during the intermission between the women’s and men’s games Friday, “for his support and aid in making the Generals Soccer programs a reality.” Continuing play in their first-ever year of competition, the men play Western Nebraska at 1 p.m. followed by the women at 3 p.m., with both games on Maier Field.

Maier Field is named for the former SC president and current chairman of the Sheridan County Board of County Commissioners. Maier served as the school’s president from 1988 to 2004, and had the original vision of building a field at SC. He officiated soccer for 22 years.

“We are honored by Dr. Maier’s contributions to Sheridan College and the soccer program,” SC Athletics Director Steve Smiley said in the release from the school Thursday afternoon.

The Generals soccer teams spent their first month of the season playing road games across the Region IX conference. This will be the second time the teams have played Western Nebraska this season. The men and women each fell by 3-0 scores in their first meetings with Western Nebraska in September.

On Saturday, the men’s team is scheduled to host Northeastern Junior College at 11 a.m. The Generals lost 3-0 to Northeastern on Sept. 13.
