Lady Broncs fly past Buffalo winning 11 of 12 events

SHERIDAN — The Lady Broncs swimming and diving team nearly swept Buffalo in their home opener Tuesday afternoon at the Sheridan Junior High School pool.

As they’ve already produced a host of state qualifiers on the road so far this season, they didn’t produce any new ones Tuesday, but the girls swam seven state-qualifying times in front of their home crowd on their way to winning 11 of 12 events in the dual.

Buffalo’s Hannah Chapin swam a 4A state qualifying 1:30.06 in the 100-meter backstroke for her team’s only event victory. Katie Beardlsee was second in the event at 1:37.68. Beardslee won the 50-meter freestyle in 31.39.

The Lady Broncs 400-meter freestyle relay team of Mackenzie Dougherty, Emily Spiegelberg, Gretchen Dougherty and Payton Brilz won in 4:35.80. The same team began the meet with a first-place 2:13.52 in the 200-meter medley relay. Brilz won the 200-meter freestyle (2:29.19) and the 400-meter freestyle (5:04.02) races in state qualifying times. As did Mackenzie Dougherty in the 200-meter individual medley (2:45.32) and then the 100-meter butterfly (1:14.67).

Spiegelberg won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:14.59, five seconds ahead of the qualifying requirement. She also took the 100-meter freestyle in 1:08.57.

The team has plenty more home competition this season. The Lady Broncs host the Sheridan Pre with Jackson Sept. 27 then Sheridan Invite Sept. 28. On Oct. 4, they host Kelly Walsh and Natrona. They will host Riverton and Cody on Oct. 11.
