SHERIDAN — Sheridan County Public Library System has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to host “The Big Read.”
The Big Read is a program managed by Arts Midwest and designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment.
Sheridan County Public Library System is one of 77 nonprofit organizations to receive this grant.
The Big Read in Sheridan County will focus on ”A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines. Nearly 550 copies of this book will be distributed free of charge to residents in preparation for upcoming discussions.
As part of The Big Read, Sister Helen Prejean will give a presentation Oct. 1 at 5:30 p.m. in the Inner Circle at Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library.
Prejean, author of the nonfiction book “Dead Man Walking,” has been instrumental in sparking national dialogue on the death penalty.
She was asked to correspond with a death row inmate and after witnessing his execution, she wrote a book about the experience. Sheridan County Fulmer Public Library will be handing out 50 free copies of the 20th anniversary edition of “Dead Man Walking.”
Norleen Healy will moderate a discussion of this book Sept. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Inner Circle. For more information about The Big Read see neabigread.org.driver safety classes.
