SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College women’s soccer team got a goal from Stephany Sessions but fell 3-1 in Scottsbluff, Neb., Saturday.
Western Nebraska Community College (4-0-0) got three first-half goals and went on to hand the Lady Generals their second conference loss in as many tries. Sessions’ goal was the first for Sheridan College (0-0-3) ever in a conference game.
“Our second half play was great,”head coach Stefan Skillman said. “If we would have played that way the whole time we could have pulled off the win.
“We are still fighting against experience, if we play our system the whole time and consistently we will give ourselves a chance to win.”
He said Madi Moore and Celena Kelly played great second halves and worked hard to deny WNCC chances to score. Lea Hickman and Shelby Duett played important minutes as well, challenging the opposing defense.
“I liked our second-half play, and I definitely like the ladies’ never-quit attitude,” Skillman said.
Sheridan College plays Trinidad State Junior College Friday at 6 p.m. in Trinidad, Colo.
Generals drop two on the road
SHERIDAN — After beginning their inaugural Region IX campaign with a draw last week, the Sheridan College men’s soccer team dropped two games over the weekend.
Friday, they fell 3-0 to Northeastern Junior College before dropping a 4-0 contest with Western Nebraska Saturday in Scottsbluff, Neb.
“We started the game with good possession and controlled the large majority in the first half,” head coach Austin Albers said of the NJC defeat. “Things fell apart after the official awarded them with a penalty kick that put them up 1-0. After that we did a poor job at keeping composure and playing from behind.”
Saturday’s game had missed opportunities, Albers said.
“We were disorganized and did not follow our assignments defensively through the first half,” he said. “We missed a couple of opportunities off the post that would have pulled us out of our slump, but that’s the way it goes. Western Nebraska had a lot of speed and controlled the game through most of the match. We did create a lot of chances in the second half but we were unable to find the back of the net.”
The Generals (1-2-1) play at Trinidad State (1-1-0) Friday then Otero Junior College (0-2-0) Saturday.
