Prep golfers descend on Sheridan

SHERIDAN — Cheyenne East’s Quinton Pope shot a 70 and leads the Sheridan High School Invite after one day at Kendrick Golf Course.

For Sheridan, they’ll try to make up a sixth-place team score after a tough day Thursday.

Jack Mavrakis shot an 82 following his tournament second place last weekend in Gillette in which he played into a playoff.

With Mavrakis tied for 11th, the tournament’s final day began this morning at Kendrick.

Other Bronc golfers shot season-bests Thursday, head coach Larry Martoglio said. Alex Williams is tied for 15th after his 83, Logan Johnson is tied for 23th after an 86 and Jacob Belus shot a 90 and is tied for 34th. Sheridan’s Bailey Bonnet is in 45th after a 94.

“Some of the boys, they had their best rounds,” Martoglio said. “They had their personal bests this year, that was nice, and you should play better on your home course. Hopefully, we get all five boys playing better and we can post a better boys team score.”

For the Lady Broncs, Martoglio was yet again pleased with the play of his two freshmen varsity golfers.

“Our girls are doing a nice job,” he said. “Kayla (Allen) had her personal best and Victoria (Owings) is in a position where she can have a good round today and probably finish in the top 10,” he said. “I’m really proud of our ninth grade girls.”

Owings shot a 100 Thursday and Allen shot a 96.

The Big Horn golf team is also competing in the tournament, and head coach Mila Stender said that her team was motivated by the chance at playing with 3A and 4A schools.

“Matt (Hansen) shot well individually, the wind was blowing like crazy,” she said, adding that she expected Jack Roberts (97), Nick McAdoo (93) and Brody Bard (103) to relax a little more in Friday’s round. Ty LaMeres shot a 101 Thursday.
Madeline Craig shot low personally Thursday with a 125 for the Lady Rams. Madi Pehringer shot a 140 and Jamie Kitterman led the Lady Rams with her 116.

Taylor Nance did not play Thursday due to obligations with school, but she did play Friday and the Lady Rams will have a team score with her round added. The team was in fourth out of four team scores from Thursday.
Natrona’s Caitlyn Skavdahl led the girls scores by four strokes with her 81.
