SHERIDAN — The Sheridan College Generals soccer team opened conference play Wednesday night in Powell, playing the preseason No. 20 team in the country to a draw.
Sheridan (1-0-1) and Northwest College (2-2-1) played to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night as the game was called due to darkness in overtime.
Sheridan College’s Tanner Alseike hit the team’s first goal late in the first half, and Hunter Reece added an equalizer late in the second half.
“Our guys came to play tonight,” head coach Austin Albers tweeted after the game, adding that the team hit the post in the Golden Goal (sudden death overtime) period. Sheridan continues its road trip with a game at Western Nebraska Community College at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Northwest 1, Lady Generals 0
SHERIDAN — A first-half goal from a Sheridan High School grad turned out to be the decider in Sheridan College’s 1-0 loss Wednesday in Powell.
Northwest College’s Ricki Ryan, from Sheridan, scored late in the first half as the Lady Generals (0-2-0) dropped the one goal game to open Region IX play.
Head coach Stefan Skillman said that they controlled the first 25 minutes of the game, missing a couple of opportunities including an open net.
“I thought the girls did well,” Skillman said. “Jacey Repsis played out of her mind,” he praised the Sheridan-native goalkeeper, saying that she finished with 23 or 24 saves in the second half to hold the score at 1-0.
He said that after a couple of tough losses against very fast teams leading up to their conference opener, the team realized they could play with and counter attack Powell.
But they played defense for most of the second half and when they got tired, began to lose their system, which they’re still learning, he said.
“When you get tired you start to go back to bad habits, habits you had in high school, and that doesn’t work in college soccer.”
“I think we’re getting there,” he said. The Lady Generals had about four opportunities on goal in the final three minutes, he said, but were unable to draw even.
They play at Western Nebraska Community College at 2 p.m. Saturday.
