The Foundation of Sheridan Memorial Hospital and the Powder Horn Ladies Golf Association put together their collective brain power and creativity and begat a fund raiser of the first order.
The synapses were firing! And the greater community benefits.
Proceeds from the Drive for the Cause – Helping Hearts supported he new heart Cardiac Cath Center at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. These two groups raised some $37,000 last weekend.
Friday night last, The Powder Horn hosted the social that included a slew of auctions, raffles, live entertainment and other lively events, along with just-the-right-touch of decorating.
Saturday, there was a no-score golf tournament at The Powder Horn that featured 20 teams, more than 50 volunteers and 55 sponsors. The competition came from the form of the best team name, best cart decoration and of course, best attire.
Those getting the ink, include:
• Best name – Nurses Call the Shots, featuring: Charla Miller, Maurita Meehan, Joanna Briggs, Jan Votaw.
• Best Cart — The Bloody Marys. The golf cars featured IV bags with Bloody Marys therein. Said one golfer: “Popular cart; they worked.” Featuring: Karen Heeran, Bev Cochran, Joyce Groneberg, Margaret McNinch.
• Best Attire – The Heart Throbs. Featuring: Lynette Heide, Mary Kay Liggett, Renea Parker, Alyssa Wright.
Red, given its visual association with heart care, was a popular color.
So says Tina Mediate, one of the movers-and-shakers of the event, “the Powder Horn Ladies Golf Association was magnificent” to work with. Ada Kirven, the Foundation’s executive director, echoed: “Everyone was a winner at this one. It was a great event.”
It’s worth noting, too, that in the last two years, the Welch Cancer Center has opened and most recently, the new cardiac care center at Sheridan Memorial Hospital. This is flat-out remarkable for a city and county of our population. Real progress, this.

The on again, off again church-goer was coming out of church one day, and the preacher was standing at the door to shake hands. He grabbed the man by the hand and pulled him aside.
The pastor said, “You need to join the Army of the Lord!”
The man replied, “I’m already in the Army of the Lord, pastor.”
The pastor questioned, “How come I don’t see you except at Christmas and Easter?”
The man whispered back, “I’m in the Secret Service.”
