Broncs 7th at Michelle Ludwig Invite

SHERIDAN — Sophomore Taylor Bruso pushed the Bronc harriers to a seventh-place finish at the Michelle Ludwig Invitational Saturday in Sheridan.

Bruso’s 17-minute, 38-second time on the 5,000-meter VA Medical Center course was good enough for 11th on a hot afternoon at Sheridan High School’s annual host meet.

Ricky Faure’s 16:21.11 was first, and Rock Springs won the boys leg as they boasted the first-, second- and fourth-place individual runners Saturday. Faure won the race 19 seconds ahead of the second-place runner.

For the Lady Broncs, Janika Sweeney (23:14.47 for 42nd place) paced Sheridan as the team finished ninth. Kimberly Holiday of Cody ran a 19:30.55 while Campbell County High School’s third-, fourth- and fifth-place runners vaulted them into first place out of the girls team scores.

The event was a hot one Saturday, but SHS head coach Art Baures was pleased with the way his team handled the conditions on their home course.

“I think the heat takes its toll, but we practiced in a lot more heat than a lot of the schools,” Baures said. “We handled it well. The best thing about the meet was the competition, we placed seventh in the boys but they all got so much faster, that competition does that.”

A young team, the Broncs have four sophomores, one junior and one senior on the squad.

“It was very significant, our improvement, in the way that we raced,” Baures said. “I was impressed with all of our kids JV and varsity. The boys finished a little better, but our learning curve is very steep right now. We had many of our kids step up from JV to varsity this week and I was very proud of our efforts.”

Baures added that the higher level of competition was apparent as Bruso’s 11th-place time would have been third at last year’s meet.

“With Taylor Bruso, you could see his experience come out, you could see he was prepared and he knew what to do,” Baures said. “He knew how to compete.”

With the state meet set for Oct. 26 on the VA course, schools were eager to show up and participate Saturday.

“Everybody wanted their kids to get on the course,” Baures said. “It’s an amazing course.

“There are so many positive things, it’s spectator friendly, and it’s middle-range fast, there’s a few rolling hills, but it has just the right degree of difficulty.”

More runners means better competition. With 22 teams — 216 girls and 260 boys in the junior varsity and varsity races — there’s always someone to pass.

“When there’s 40 kids in a race, you can run by yourself for a few miles,” Baures said.

“The volunteers were great,” he added. “The VA people are wonderful, they let us use every square inch of our facility. It takes quite the volunteer effort.”
