Vball briefs: Sheridan County prep spikers in Gillette

Big Horn volleyball wins one, loses two at Gillette

SHERIDAN — Playing bigger schools can be intimidating, but the Big Horn Lady Rams didn’t let that stop them from putting up a good fight in Gillette Friday.

In pool play, they were able to beat Glenrock in two sets in their first match (25-18, 25-15). Games two and three were tight but proved challenging enough to keep the Lady Rams from winning. They fell to Casper Natrona (23-25, 23-25) and Cheyenne South (22-25, 24-26).

“That killed me,” head coach Leigh McLaughlin said. “We just made critical errors at critical times and didn’t come out on top because you can’t do that against these bigger teams.”

Still, McLaughlin was happy with her team’s work and looks forward to Saturday’s tournament play.

“I’m trying out different rotations, putting in some younger girls who are stepping up and playing hard,” McLaughlin said. “We accomplished a lot as a team. We have a lot to build on.”

There are 24 total teams in the Gillette tournament.

Rough start, strong finish for TR Lady Eagles

SHERIDAN — The Tongue River Lady Eagles ended up in the bronze bracket at number three after winning one and losing two in pool play Friday in Gillette.

They fell to the Douglas Bearcats (11-25, 14-25) and then fell again to Rock Springs (15-25, 21-25) before getting a bit of wind under their wings in their third match against Laramie. The Lady Eagles were able to pull together and beat Laramie (25-20, 26-24).

“The first match was a rough start, but we progressively got better and they played a really clean match against Laramie,” head coach Michelle Nielsen said. “They did really well.”

Senior Kortni Sharp led with 12 kills and eight digs. Senior Rylee Logan had eight digs, and sophomore Allison Reed pitched in with 11 assists.

“It’s a good start,” Nielsen said. “They ended the day playing really well together. I think tomorrow will be a different story from what today was.”

SHS volleyball sweeps three matches at Gillette

SHERIDAN — Lady Broncs volleyball swept the court in all three pool play games in Gillette Friday, beating Rapid City Central (28-26, 23-25, 26-24), Green River (25-27, 25-7, 25-17) and Wright (25-19, 27-25).

The Lady Broncs played well enough to end up in the gold bracket for Saturday’s tournament. They will face Natrona County at 11 a.m.

“I’m excited that the girls are coming together more and more as a team,” head coach Wendi Ruby said. “They’re starting to compete, and I’m excited that they worked hard and got some wins and are having a lot of fun.”
