Volunteers deserve thanks

As the Sheridan County Field of Honor draws to a close, I would be remiss if I did not publicly thank the dedicated and hard-working committee who pulled this project together so beautifully.

This project has been ongoing since April and a seed in the ground as early as February.

The following people volunteered their time and many talents in an amazing way. The committee consisted of:

• Kent Anderson, Sheridan College plant coordinator

• Cheri Balkenbush, marketing chairwoman

• Brett Burtis, Sheridan College veterans affairs

• Jana Clements, secretary and communications chairwoman

• Jacque Harrod, treasurer

• Glenda Jellis, Third Thursday and Farmers Market volunteer coordinator

• Carole Perkins and Kary Matthews, assisting with organization and assembly

• Jesus Rios and Ryan Mulholland, sponsorship chairmen

• Thayer Shafer, flag storage chairman

• Jim Schlenker, grounds and honor guard chairman

• Del Seville, Sheridan College facilities chairman

• Terry and Daphne Weitzel and Marcia Gonda, opening ceremony chairpersons

Also I must thank all the many volunteers who showed up to assemble all 1,000 flags and then post them. These amazing volunteers ranged in age from early teens to 80s. There were volunteers in wheelchairs as well as teenagers wanting to do community work. Our committee envisioned this project bringing together all ages in our county for a common good.

With all of their input and hours of work, the Sheridan County Field of Honor became a beautiful reality, and the Wounded Warrior Project will receive a check for more than $25,000 to help the soldiers who have given so much for our country so that we can live in beautiful Sheridan County.
