Everything can be a poison

Re: Fluoride debate

Some folks think fluoride should not be added to the drinking water because it is a poison.

I respect their choice to not drink the water however; the plain truth is everything is a poison! It is the concentration that matters.

There are those who have died from drinking too much (non-fluoridated) bottled water. http://www.nbcnews.com/id/16614865/ns/us_news-life/t/woman-dies-after-water-drinking-contest/.

Some people take Coumadin, which is a rat poison, as a blood thinner http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warfarin. I think we can all now agree that this poison argument is moot.

In the proper concentration, the benefits of fluoridated water far outweigh any perceived or known risks; otherwise no sane person would condone such an act.

Most folks are doing far more harm to themselves by drinking excessive soda pops, having poor home care habits (both medical and dental) and driving/riding without a seatbelt.

Now that we have put the perceived risk of fluoridated water in perspective, the fact remains that those who can least afford dental treatment benefit the most.

Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (some fairly smart doctors, researchers and scientists I might add) have on their strategic plan to support the increase in community water fluoridation (currently estimated at 75 percent of the U.S. population).

From CDC website: “For 65 years, community water fluoridation has been a safe and healthy way to effectively prevent tooth decay. CDC has recognized water fluoridation as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th Century.”
