Lady Generals spikers sweep conference opener

SHERIDAN — The Lady Generals were kind to the crowd that braved the sauna-like heat of the late-summer Bruce Hoffman Golden Dome Thursday night, making quick work of their conference opener in straight sets.

Sheridan College defeated Central Wyoming College (25-18, 25-23, 25-16) Thursday night, moving to 1-0 in Region IX play and 7-4 overall.

“It was good to finally get into a conference game, I think our girls were ready and prepared well to start conference,” head coach Jennifer Stadler said. “I thought mentally we came out well and never really let up. We played well when the ball came on our side. We controlled the tempo of the game and set our pace on what we want to accomplish the rest of the season.”

While the crowd braved the heat, the Lady Generals were composed. In the match that lasted just over an hour, they jumped out early and held the momentum throughout each set.

Carley Gerving finished with eight kills, Britney Titensor had 17 digs and Tyler Chrisman had four blocks to lead the Lady Generals Thursday night.

As they finally enter conference play after a slough of games through busy weekend tournaments — playing well especially last weekend in a home event that saw them win three games on Saturday and one Friday — their coach is pleased with early progress.

“We’re better at this point in time in our season than we were last year,” Stadler admitted. “I still think we have a lot of growing to do, but we’re starting to get there, we’re starting to click well. We just need to continue to fight and continue to work on things to get better so that hopefully we peak by the end of the year.

Sheridan College hosts another tournament this weekend.

They play Eastern Wyoming College at 3 p.m. and Williston State College at 7 p.m. today.  Saturday the Lady Generals face Dawson Community College at 4 p.m.

Games count toward their overall record but not toward their conference mark.
