SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School tennis team split its girls and boys dual with Jackson Thursday in their season opener.
The Lady Broncs, despite entering the season without a senior on the squad, defeated Jackson 3-2 Thursday at SHS. The Broncs were edged 3-2.
No. 1 singles players and defending state champions Reed Ritterbusch and Julia Fenn cruised past their first opponents.
Ritterbusch started his senior tennis season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jackson’s Ben Fairbanks.
Picking up where she left off in a freshman season when she was named United States Tennis Association Wyoming District Junior Player of the Year, Fenn won, 6-0, 6-0, Thursday over Michelle Slaughter.
Lady Broncs sophomore Katelynn Brooks made quick work of Ellie Kucera, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 2 doubles game. No. 3 doubles team Belen Espada Vioque and Tailor Geeting defeated Jackson’s Ann Shea and Alica Ednie 6-4, 4-6 and 6-4.
The boys had just one other win Thursday. It came in the No. 1 doubles match when Logan Garstad and Turner Martini defeated Jackson Livingood and Peter Frank. After dropping the first set 3-6, Garstad’s quality play at the net and Martini’s well-placed returns helped the Broncs duo breeze through the final two sets 6-1 and 6-1.
