Robert W. Wilson Jr. M.D passed away at the Sheridan Manor on Monday, March 25, 2013, after a very long illness. He was born on June 5, 1919, to Harriett and Robert Wilson in Sterling, Kansas. He lived with an aunt in Sterling spending holidays with his mother in Denver, CO. He graduated from Sterling High School in 1938. He attended the University of Kansas. His education was interrupted by the first draft in August of 1941. Upon completing his basic training he was transferred to the officer training program. He then served as a Chemical Welfare Officer in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska from 1941-1945.
He married AJ’leane Wilson in 1943. They were later divorced. They had four children, Robert F. Wilson, John Kemper, Mary Ann and Charles Wilson. Upon discharge he returned to Denver to complete his undergraduate program at the University of Denver, then graduated from the University of Colorado, School of Medicine with honors in 1950. He completed his internship at St. Luke’s Hospital in Denver. He was in general practice for one year before moving to Dallas, TX to obtain his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Parkland Hospital.
He returned to Denver and became a partner in the Colorado Clinic in Denver. He then joined the Obstetrical staff at both Swedish and Porter Hospital in Englewood, CO serving as Chairman of those Departments. He practiced his profession for many years. He was offered a Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, CA. Upon completion, he returned to Denver and became Chief of the Residency program at St. Lukes-Pres Hospital in Denver.
He married Swanee K. Anderson on April 19, 1974. They moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to accept an Associate Professorship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of New Mexico and School of Medicine. They remained for five years when Dr. Wilson accepted the Chairmanship of the Fetal-Medicine program at the University of South Dakota. They lived in Sioux Falls, S.D. Until he retired.
Dr. Wilson belonged to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecologists. He was an Avid Golfer and belonged to the Cherry Hills County Club in Engelwood, CO from 1954 to 1980. Tanawn Country Club in Albuquerque, and the Country Club in Sioux Falls, S.D. Following his retirement they moved to Sheridan, where he joined the Sheridan Country Club and Elk’s Lodge. He received his life membership in 2012. He did love his golf and frequent gin rummy games. As his health failed he found great joy with his constant companions Coco and J.J. Both Shitze puppies.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harriett and H.F. Downer of Denver CO, his daughter Mary Ann Aloia of Salt Lake City, UT, his first wife AJ’leane Wilson of Denver, CO, and his step-son Kevin E. Anderson of Sheridan, WY.
He is survived by his wife Swanee Wilson, his children Robert (Jane) Denver, CO, John (Sharon) of Greensboro, N.C., Charles of Denver, CO. His step children Kim (Jack) Rae of Buffalo, WY, Randy Anderson of Billings, MT, and friend, Cindy Morris. Grandchildren, Graham B. Wilson, Kirston Wilson, Amanda Wilson, Anders Rae, Brooks McRae, Jordon and Quin Anderson and two great grandchildren.
Memorials can be made to the Elk’s Memorial Cemetery, 45 W. Brundage, Sheridan, WY 82801 or to the Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.
Per his request cremation has taken place and his ashes will be placed in the Elks Memorial Cemetery in Sheridan, WY.
