SHERIDAN — The Sheridan High School boys golf team finished fifth Friday at a fall season-opening tournament in Cody.
Sheridan dropped from a day-one fourth place spot. Head coach Larry Martoglio said his squad didn’t shoot as well as their Thursday rounds, accounting for the finish.
Junior Jack Mavrakis led the way for Sheridan, shooting a two-day 79-79—158. Gillette’s Danny Davis won the individual tournament with his 147.
Jackson had the top team score, a 638, and Gillette was second with a 662. Sheridan’s Bailey Bonnett shot 181, and Alex Williams scored 190 as the Broncs finished at 721, behind fourth-place Cody’s 718.
For the SHS girls, who are competing one short of the three players required for a team score, Victoria Owings and Kayla Allen, both freshmen, finished sixth and 13th, respectively. Owings moved up from eighth place after Thursday, shooting a 94 Friday. Allen cut six strokes off her Thursday score with her 107 Friday.
“I was pleased with their performance, they improved each day,” Martoglio said.
“They did a nice job, it’s a little bit intimidating in their first high school tournament, but they did quite well. They are just going to get better each tournament.”
Cody’s Sydney Gun won the tournament with a 172. Gillette, with a 570, won the team tournament out of the four squads who brought enough players and registered team scores.
Sheridan travels to Worland for another two-day event Thursday and Friday.
