Respect applicants during job searches

What happened to common courtesy and respect in today’s job market or for that fact, common courtesy and respect In general?

By that statement, I mean, when an applicant takes the time to fill out an application in detail or simply sends in their resume to an email as directed by the job listing or potential employer website; shouldn’t that potential employer at least give the applicant some respect and shred of decency and treat the applicant as a human being and not like a number?

Understanding in today’s world and economic situation employers must streamline, cut corners and utilize the most time they have. But to dehumanize and distance an applicant, in a small town no less, is basically like cutting your nose off to spite your face. One never knows where their next customer may come from. It could be the applicant you snubbed and never responded to at all. You catch more flies with honey. So what if they didn’t qualify, or in fact if you don’t like them, or they didn’t meet the cut; a simple “Your skills didn’t match our qualifications,” or “The position has been filled,” is better than no word at all. Even a default email is better than hearing nothing. No response is just plain rude.

Many local employers preach “communication,” “friendliness” and “respect” in their online applications, yet they do not practice it with their applicants in person and in several cases, I have witnessed the lack of communication, friendliness and respect amongst management, supervisors and employees in public in a few stores throughout the area.

In fact several places in town, one cannot even drop off a resume. How impersonal. How can employees be expected to behave in the fashion that you expect if you do not lead by example.

Employers must be a positive role model especially in these economic times and demonstrate outstanding public relations. Each employee is an ambassador to the public and each employer should conduct proper training as such.

Sheridan has many good things about it, however as a whole it would do well to remember everyone plays a role in keeping this community going, from the most simplistic job to the most complex.
