Wild, successful 33rd annual Sheridan County Rodeo (full results)

SHERIDAN — It’s a rare thing to get to ride a wild animal with all your friends in front of a hometown crowd.

Most sports require far less set up than a rodeo. The equine, staffing and simple arena requirements of rodeo make up a significant to do.

That’s just a small descriptor of the work that went into the 33rd go-round of the Sheridan County Rodeo this past weekend, with four performances Friday through Sunday at the fairgrounds bringing competitors ages 5-to 70-years-old together in front of their peers.

Terry Lenhart, who has been SCR president for eight years now, says that putting on the unique event takes a large volunteer effort.

“We have a 12-member board and we work year round to prepare,” he said. “We’re a nonprofit so we take donations, businesses contribute a lot to help us with the awards.”

Four performances had everything a rodeo competitor or fan could ask for — pole bending, calf riding and ribbon tying for the youngsters, to the always entertaining rough stock competition and even wild cow milking on Sunday.

A $5 entry fee only goes so far for the annual event which began as a way to increase attendance at the county fair. Livestock, equipment, feed and the awards are made possible through various donations.

“We do keep it very modest at the gate because we really want to promote families showing up,” Lenhart said. “It’s kind of in the old style of rodeo where the community gathers together and tests themselves against each other.”

Friday night featured some of the sport’s unpredictability as a bull got loose outside the fairgrounds onto the street, but was quickly rounded up.

“We did have a bull that jumped the fence and caused some excitement,” Lenhart said. “That’s just part of the sport of rodeo, some of the livestock is wild and we just have to deal with that accordingly.”

Inside the arena, the event featured the county’s best cowboys and cowgirls, past and present, including local high school bareback riding finalist Jeffery Zdziarski and, of course, Bryce Burnell, who won a national title in bull riding at the high school finals this July in Rock Springs. Burnell’s ride Saturday night won him the 2013 county rodeo bull riding buckle as well. Shane Stevens won the bareback riding and Taylor Kelly won the saddle bronc buckle.

College rodeo star in the making Kylee Cahoy was there, competing with her mother, Lorie, both of whom are past all-around champions of the county rodeo. Kylee’s younger sister Shayana won the senior poles, and Lorie and her husband Dale won the husband/wife ribbon roping event. Ronda Holwell took women’s goat tying and breakaway roping, while Caty Graves took women’s barrels.

All-around cowboy and cowgirl saddles will be awarded Sunday night during an awards ceremony.

“It was really good turnout and really good competition,” Lenhart said. “There were a lot of big smiles on little kids’ faces as they were competing and I think everyone had a good time and it was a great success.”

The awards ceremony is set for 6 p.m. at the Big Horn Women’s Club. Award recipients are asked to “dress western.”
