SHERIDAN — Sheridan resident Jacky Jones recently took home several gold medals from the Wyoming Senior Olympics held in Casper July 10 -13. Jones competed in billiards and table tennis and has competed in pickleball in previous games.
This was her sixth Olympics games. She and her husband moved to Sheridan in 2004 and they are active members at the Sheridan Senior Center. The couple has four children and five grandchildren.
I got started competing in the Senior Olympics when…I first heard about it many years ago during Fitness Week put on jointly by the Sheridan Senior Center and the YMCA. Participants were encouraged to try new activities to stay fit and healthy in mind and body. I later played table tennis at the Gillette Olympics games and was hooked on the competition. A friend and I tried pickleball and both fell in love with the game so when the Olympics came to Sheridan we were ready and registered for table tennis and pickleball. During the games I was pleasantly surprised to see many of the people I had met in Gillette and in subsequent years have seen them at other Wyoming Senior Olympic Games.
More seniors should participate in competitive events because…there are events at all levels of abilities. I would encourage any senior to think about entering an event at future Olympic Games. We’re all looking for ways to keep healthy and have fun, why not investigate trying your hand at an Olympic event. You’re always a winner when one of the many perks is meeting new people your own age with interests the same as yours.
My next challenge is…well, it’s always a challenge to juggle your life to leave time for the things you want to do like singing with the Sheridanaires, acting with the Senior Players, playing table tennis and billiards and volunteering. The housework can wait.
We moved to Sheridan…to be close to our daughter and had no idea what a new and wonderful page we were turning. Sheridan has so much to offer in quality of life. All you have to do is get out there and give it a try. We’re very happy we did.
