SHERIDAN — The NX Bar Ranch lost its bid yesterday to continue its reign as winner of the annual Beds Along the Bighorns race. In a tight race, NX Bar lost the sixth and final heat of the race to Kane Cattle Company and Bob’s Super Clean.
The annual race, which fills the one-hour time slot between the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast and the start of the parade, featured six teams this year. Each co-ed team consists of six members — four runners who push the wheeled-bed and two riders, one of whom steers the contraption. The race runs several blocks along Main Street, ending at Grinnell Street, with the runners sprinting the entire length.
“It is pretty tiring,” Kane Cattle Company team runner Dakota Larner said. “A lot more than you would think.”
The Kane Cattle Company is a literal newcomer to the race, having borrowed an existing racing bed from Bob’s Super Clean.
“We just threw a team together two days ago,” runner Nathan Berg said.
“We practiced yesterday for the first time,” driver Madison Havens said. “It is pretty scary. I was worried it would break down or the tires would pop.”
The Kane Cattle Company team consisted of Larner, Berg, Havens, Priscilla Bringas, Nate Kane and Collin Eisenman.
Beds Along the Bighorns has been held as part of Sheridan-Wyo-Rodeo festivities for more than two decades and NX Bar Ranch has won first place the last two years. The winners receive a $500 prize to share.
